in Görlitz-Zgorzelec, Germany - Poland
and Delegates Meeting of

Quality and Relationship in Medicine
Relation based medicine as a core topic of quality management in times
of evidence based medicine
The aspect of quality management in medicine takes great interest
through over the
world not only in Europe and North America but also in many other
countries and it
begins to dominate the approach to patient and its treatment more and
more. One of
the founders of evidence based medicine, David Sacket, has nevertheless
stated that
“the most powerful therapeutic tool you’ll ever have, is your own
personality”. The
handling of this tool and the consideration of the relationship between
the doctor and
his patient has been the topic of the Balint Movement since its
beginning in the 50th
of the last century.
The topic of the Middle-European Balint congress tries to bring together
both, modern
medicine with its new accent on quality management and evidence based
medicine
and the very important implicit basis, e.g. the relationship between
physician and
patient under the aspect of relation based medicine as the necessary
counterpoint.
Patient orientated treatment, patient security, patient rights and
patient education are
indispensable parts of quality management in medicine. The increasing
influence of
patient organisation in formulating guidelines in medicine is another
aspect bringing
the subject of the enterprise medicine more into the focus. Terms as
‘informed
consent’ or ‘shared decision making’ are terms, correctly interpreted,
of a relation
based medicine, which today are as necessary as before.
The congress in the binational city of Görlitz-Zgorzelec will pay
attention to this very
topic. We will work In the double form of plenary sessions with
presentation of papers
and their discussion and practical work in small and fish-bowl balint
groups. In
addition, there will be several workshops exemplifying different aspects
of the
subject. In this way we want to bring up the Balint work more in the
centre of current
performance of medicine.
